Where in the life that I lead
do I have time to while away,
and sleep under willow trees
or get lost beneath the hay
I used to say I was a student,
that I read a lot of books,
when all the while in summer
I was sleeping in any nook
I could find. Precariously
placed on branch tops
with hula hoops from the store
and our experiments with hops.
My favourite place to sleep
was in the the lavender
field, by the back of Rachel's.
I used to say goodbye to her
and smell the sleeve of my coat.
I used to think it was her smell
that I loved, but I fell for a flower,
and now I'm too embarrassed to tell
her. I walk across the bridge
where I lost my legs for a while,
and then on to the pub to friends
for a familiar face and a warm smile.
